Dry Brushing

imagesThe epidermis, which is the outer layer of skin, shed’s millions of dead skin daily.  To help keep your skin healthy it is important to help remove some of those dead skin cells from your body by exfoliating the skin.  One form of skin exfoliation is dry body brushing.

Dry body brushing is brushing your body with a brush that has natural fiber bristles.  Make sure to avoid nylon bristles for they can irritate the skin, and when choosing a brush it is also recommended to have a long handle to get those hard to reach spots.

You will want to dry brush before showering while your skin is dry. Always brush toward your heart. Brush each part starting with you feet and working your way up. Brush lightly with a few stokes especially on tender areas. You do not want to brush too hard; doing so will irritate the skin. When brushing your back, come up and over the shoulders and around the neck.  Once you have completed dry brushing your entire body you then rinse off in the shower.  It is recommended to change the temperature on the water from hot to cold, to stimulate blood circulation.

When you get out from the shower make sure to massage your skin with a good moisturizer such as a goat’s milk lotion, and always remember to wash your brush with warm soapy water at least every two weeks, allowing it to dry completely before re-use.

Ishinglesf you have had chickenpox you very well could receive shingles without any warning.  Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, and even if a person has already had chicken pox the virus can still live but remain dormant in nerve cells.  If then later in life it does become active it can cause shingles also known as herpes zoster.  Generally those who suffer from shingles are over the age of 60, and the chances of getting shingles are higher the older you are; however it is not uncommon for young people to get shingles as well.

Many doctors have prescribed medications for treating shingles in the past that contain steroids in them.  Recent research has been suggesting avoiding such steroids for treatment, questioning the effectiveness of these steroids.  There still remains no definite cure for shingles but there are many natural remedies, and natural skin care available for you to consult with your doctor about.  Here are a list of natural remedies and things to do to help relieve the painful symptoms of shingles, and remember to always consult with your health care provider before exploring any new forms of treatment, even if they seem harmless.

1.    Eat a healthy diet, try to eliminate sugars, and make sure you are getting plenty of vitamins, B12, E, and C
2.    Reduce your stress!  Shingles have been known to be triggered by increases anxiety and stress.
3.    Avoid wearing tight clothing and itchy fabrics such as wool.

Some natural remedies to consult with your doctor to see if they would help your particular symptoms are.
1.    Mix some cayenne pepper with some body lotion such as goats milk lotion and rub on affected area.  Cayenne pepper is known to relieve the itching and burning.
2.    Take some uncooked oatmeal and mix it up until it becomes a pasty form, and apply to relieve the burning and itching.
3.    Apple cider vinegar taken internally and externally can be very affective in relieving symptoms from shingles as well.
4.    Also there are many essential oils such as geranium oil, and herbs like lemon balm, oregano, and rosemary that can be use to help reduce symptoms of shingles.

Don’t wait for the symptoms to get much worse before seeking medical attention, shingles can lead to many serious complications, such as skin infections, loss of vision and hearing, long term nerve pain known as postherpetic neuralgia, paralysis on one side of the face, and much more.  Though there is no cure for shingles yet, there are many natural remedies to reduce the symptoms.  If you or someone you know is suffering from shingles, encourage them to seek out some of these natural treatments with their doctor, and hopefully experience much relief.

goatGoat’s milk products are better for you!  I am constantly encouraged seeing more and more people becoming informed of the subtle dangers in the chemical infested commercial skin care industry.  However there are still a lot of you that are still unaware of the harsh chemicals that are found in these commercial products, and continue to buy what the TV ads are telling you to buy.  The very best thing you can do for your skin, scalp and hair is treating it with the most natural product out there, and that would be goat’s milk.  Yes, you heard me correctly, goat’s milk.

Goat’s milk since biblical times as been referred to as a great moisturizer for the skin and even Cleopatra was known to bath in goat’s milk.  In general goat’s milk has many, many health benefits, but for today I want to tell you what it can do for your skin.  Goat’s milk is commonly used in bath products such as: handmade goats milk soap, shower gels, shampoos, bath soaks, and in body products such as, face creams, foot scrubs and goats milk lotion.

Goat’s milk is very rich in both antioxidant vitamins A and E.  These vitamins help destroy free radicals that are generated in your skin by the pollutants that synthetic chemicals allow to pass through.  Goat’s milk is a buffer; it contains caprylic acid that contributes to keeping your skins PH (alkalinity) closer to the skins normal PH level.  Commercial soaps are not buffered and are so far off from the skins natural PH level that it can take hours for the skin to return to its normal PH level.  If you suffer from dry skin, or even perhaps psoriasis, acne or eczema you may want to consider looking in to goat’s milk products.
