Seborrheic dermatitis, known as dandruff; is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp, which can cause constant itching, flaking, and embarrassment. What causes dandruff and how can it be treated? Dandruff is not a disease, it is not contagious and it will not cause baldness. There is no known cause to dandruff, but some research suggests that yeast which often lives on the skin, Malassezia furfur, may play a role. Others believe that harsh ingredients in many shampoos can cause the scalp to become inflamed and shed large amounts of dead skin cells as well. If you have a serious problem with dandruff, there are dozens of products out there that claim to treat the symptoms; however make sure to read all the ingredients. Though they may treat the dandruff you could be exposing your body to other unnecessary chemicals. There are many natural treatments for treating dandruff. I recommend first changing your shampoo to a milder shampoo, such as a natural shampoo bar. Ingredients such as rosemary and lavender have proven to stimulate the scalp and oils such as jojoba and castor keep the scalp moisturized.
