I had just recently blogged about the importance of skin exfoliation and had forgot to mention one other natural skin exfoliation that I enjoy using, that is much less abrasive than the loofa sponge; making it a great alternative for the more sensitive skin, and that is the felted soap bars. Felted soap bars are a lot of fun and easy to make. Of course you will need a bar of soap and some raw wool; I use sheep wool that I buy from local farmers. You will also need some hot water and optional a ribbed mat or washboard. This process can be a little time consuming but worth every minute and can also be a great project for kids. If making felted soap bars is not your thing or too time consuming, most soap makers do offer these unique soap bars, and they are definitely worth trying out, and can be easily found on-line or through local soap makers.
I am always amazed of the reaction I get from those who stop by my booth at all the different farmers markets, festivals and shows I have attended over the years, which have seen this felted soap bar for the very first time. I would have to agree with the response I often get, and that is that they really are unique and would make an excellent gift. I can’t tell you how many people were buying these felted bars as stocking stuffers. We even had quite a few gift shop owners asking if we would wholesale these custom soap bars.
To use these bars is real simple. Just wet the bar and lather up until the soap begins to sud through the wool. Handmade soaps generally last a little longer when they are felted but you should still let your felted soap bar dry out on a soap tray to dry out after each use.
